Platinum Point Yacht Club's Founding

Our club was formed in 1984 through a joint effort of interested boaters, Burnt Store Marina representatives and the Bass Brother of Texas, who were in the process of acquiring the marina and other PGI property at that time. 

The first organizational meeting of 145 potential members was held on October 27, 1984. With a grant of five thousand dollars from the developer, membership solicitation began and the new club took shape with Charter Members numbering 88.

The plot of land separating the two yacht basins of BSM was called “Platinum Point”, and the developer placed the original yacht club drawings at the tip of that property; thus the name, Platinum Point Yacht Club. Development on the point didn’t move forward at that time nor did the building of the clubhouse.

With the submission of our Articles of Incorporation and Bylaws, The Florida Department of State certified Platinum Point Yacht Club, Inc. as a Not-For-Profit Corporation organized under the laws of the State of Florida filed on January 24, 1985.

Initially, all social activities were held on the circle near the Dock master’s office or the dry storage area, and our first Commodore’s Ball was held in the BSM building known as the Gasparilla Room. We were so pleased when we moved into our rented double wide clubhouse behind the Ship’s Store which housed us for the next ten years.

The original officers and board of directors had a vision for the future, designating the grant received from the developer and all initiation fees to be set aside in a building fund which laid the groundwork for the lovely club which we all enjoy today.

Although the original clubhouse drawings for Platinum Point didn’t materialize and future BSM developers changed the “Platinum Point” plot of land to “Prosperity Point”, Platinum Point Yacht Club’s name has become widely recognized throughout the yachting community, locally, nationally and internationally.
